Job Description

Meadowbank School is a special school in Cardiff supporting 114 pupils with a wide range of complex learning needs.

Since opening in 1976, and expanding its provision in 2018, the school has grown significantly, including the addition of a new purpose-built facility in 2024.

The Role

We are seeking an exceptional, compassionate and values-driven Headteacher to lead Meadowbank in its onward journey.

You will provide both strategic leadership and day-to-day direction, ensuring a safe, inclusive and enabling environment for all learners. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading vision, culture and school improvement in line with the Curriculum for Wales
  • Ensuring the highest standards of safeguarding, wellbeing and care
  • Championing high-quality ALN practice and inclusive pedagogy
  • Inspiring, developing and supporting a committed staff team
  • Building a collaborative partnership with governors, families, the local authority and stakeholders
  • Ensuring compliance with statutory, regulatory and financial responsibilities
  • Leading sustainable improvement aligned with Estyn expectations

This is a visible, hands-on leadership role requiring empathy, resilience and compassion.

The Person

We are looking for a leader who:

  • Has substantial experience in ALN education, including complex needs
  • Demonstrates strong moral purpose, emotional intelligence and inclusivity
  • Balances strategic leadership with operational oversight
  • Has a proven track record of improving outcomes for vulnerable learners
  • Is committed to driving continuous improvement in teaching and learning
  • Builds trusted relationships with staff, pupils, families, governors and stakeholders
  • Leads with clarity, warmth and resilience
