We oversee the police complaints system in England and Wales and set the standards the police should apply when handling complaints
As a totally independent body, not part of the police or government, we investigate and make decisions on serious and sensitive cases, including where police action may have led to death or serious injury.
Our work is challenging and high-profile. Focusing on the facts, we must be balanced, fair and totally independent. We must respect human rights, while getting to the heart of some of the most serious and sensitive cases
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) oversees the police complaints system in England and Wales. We investigate the most serious matters, including deaths following police contact, and set the standards by which the police should handle complaints. We use learning from our work to influence changes in policing.
We are independent, and make our decisions entirely independently of the police and government.
