Job Description

Main Purpose of Job

Undertake and perform the caretaking and maintenance duties of the school

Key responsibilities

  • The security of the premises for which the Caretaker is responsible, together with its contents [including the operation of fire and burglar alarms and key holder responsibilities]. This includes accommodation used solely for school meals purposes.
  • The lighting and heating of the premises, including accommodation used solely for school meals where there are common services.
  • Dual Purpose Accommodation: Where accommodation is used both for educational purposes and the serving of meals, then school meals staff will prepare the area/s immediately prior to and after meals have been served and also clean areas after meals.
  • Monitor standards of cleanliness throughout the premises on a regular basis and to report unsatisfactory matters as appropriate.
  • Such other duties appertaining to the use of the premises as may be necessary from time to time in accordance with established local practice or with the reasonable requirements of the Authority.
  • A Caretaker shall be subject to the immediate day-to-day supervision and direction of the Head, or such other Officer, as may be determined by the Authority.
  • Ensure all toilets are supplied with sufficient toilet rolls and hand towels.

Outside Duties

  • Attend to lavatories, drain traps, gutters and drains.
  • Clear the playgrounds, footpaths and drives of all loose stones, broken glass, paper or other rubbish, weeds, leaves, snow etc.

Inside Duties

  • Operate the central heating system/s in accordance with the Authority’s instructions, ensure all systems are functioning correctly and that room temperatures are maintained. Report on any defects immediately to the Head.
  • Maintain boiler house/s in a clean and tidy condition.
  • See that the school premises are securely locked [windows, doors and gates], lights off, check heating and burglar alarm systems.
  • Ensure that the heaters etc. are free from combustible materials.
