Youth Café Training Manager (Youth Worker)

CONTRACT: Three Years fixed contract


To provide a working community café and training venue for Carmarthen Youth Project. The role will provide young people aged 8-25 years old with opportunities for learning about the catering industry including cooking, money management, food hygiene, customer service, marketing and using fresh produce.

The role will be to engage and support them to develop skills through activities that will help them overcome the barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential through youth work principles and practices.

To actively encourage and promote young people’s engagement in community work, volunteering and skill-sharing with community members as part of Dr M’z projects.


  • To engage with young people at the centre and outside through, particularly those difficult to reach young people and to establish relationships based on trust, empathy and respect.
  • To consult with young people to develop and facilitate a café and training programme at the centre based on their needs and through their participation in the project.
  • To actively promote and encourage young people to become involved in developing the  community cafe and give them an opportunity to develop their ideas.
  • To be responsible for the day-to-day running of a community café and manage young staff and volunteers.
  • To deliver or facilitate accredited training in food hygiene, catering and enterprise skills.
  • To develop a community business with support, finding additional and enterprising ways of turning a profit.
  • To develop, with young people, a menu and cater for customers’ needs.
  • To provide high quality customer service within the café.
  • Responsible for keeping the kitchen clean and to a high standard of hygiene as required by legislation. Ie temperature taking, regular cleaning, stock control, record keeping, ordering, waste etc.
  • Advocate on behalf of individuals and groups of young people as necessary whilst also encouraging young people into independence.
  • Encourage and engage young people to redress inequalities, value opinions and empower individuals to take action on issues affecting their lives, including health, education, unemployment, and the environment, by developing positive skills and attitudes.
  • Establish support systems for young people on a range of issues through effective networking, contacts with other service providers and volunteer mentoring.
  • Support young people to access further training and employment opportunities.
  • Ensure that evaluation of activities and courses are regularly carried out with participants and stakeholders and that the results are recorded.
  • Keep comprehensive records and statistical data through our database systems.
  • Be aware of the relevant national and local developments to support the appropriate implementation of such initiatives for the benefit of young people in Carmarthenshire.
  • Undertake such other duties as required.




  • Youth Work Qualification
  • Catering qualification or experience of catering.
  • Experience of developing and delivering activities and training
  • Knowledge of the current issues affecting young people.
  • A demonstrable commitment to Equal Opportunities and an understanding of anti-discriminatory practice.
  • Experience of working in a team and a demonstrable ability to be self-motivated and to work under own initiative.
  • An understanding of the basics of Safeguarding and General Data Protection Procedures.


  • Evidence of an interest in the voluntary sector and in making a contribution to the life of the local community.
  • Knowledge of the working of statutory agencies.
  • Knowledge of current legislation and strategy referring to children and young people e.g. The Children's Act, National Occupational Standards in Youth Work and other relevant strategies.


  • Non-judgemental.
  • Good listening skills.
  • Good organisational skills and a demonstrable ability to plan and prioritise own workload.
  • Good communication and I.T. skills and the ability to produce written reports, minutes and articles.
  • The ability to deal calmly and sympathetically with a wide range of situations.
  • A sensitive attitude to the support needs of young people, staff and volunteers when dealing with personal crises, disturbances etc.

The Project recognises that some people may not have the relevant qualifications for this post but may have such life experience that they can be considered as appropriate for work with young people. A flexible attitude may therefore be taken when assessing an individual’s suitability for a post and when shortlisting. Any such flexibility will be transparent and methodology for recruiting will be made available to all applicants on request.
