We are Business in the Community (BITC), the Prince’s Responsible Business Network. We exist to build healthy communities with successful businesses at their heart.   We are a business-led membership organisation made up of progressive businesses of all sizes who understand that the prosperity of business and society are mutually dependent. In the spirit of being a responsible business, our members are signed up to being the best they can be in delivering social, environmental and economic sustainability across all areas of their business and joining  with other businesses to bring together their collective strength and be a force for good.

BITC seeks to challenge and support business to address some of key socio-economic issues facing communities across Wales through a range of programmes initiatives and events.  All our members are keen to harness their significant resources in a movement to make stronger, more resilient and productive communities.

We are looking for an experienced leader with a proven track record of success and an understanding of the Welsh political and business environment, to help BITC to be the primary convener of responsible business in Wales.

The Director of BITC Wales will raise impact in accordance with overall organisational strategy, engaging the private, public and community sectors whilst ensuring a sustainable financial base for the operation.  Working with the BITC Executive Team and the Wales Advisory Board, the role will set the strategic direction of BITC Wales and develop appropriate programmes and activities to maximise BITC’s impact.

Responsibilities will include income generation, as well as growing the membership in line with BITC’s membership strategy and in response to the local marketplace.  Playing a leading role in business development, ensuring close collaboration with the central membership team; Integrate BITC campaigns in Wales, delivering these campaigns locally against agreed targets.  Responding to specific responsible business issues unique to Wales and explore how Wales could act as an incubator for new initiatives.

The successful candidate will have an excellent understanding of the Welsh political and business environment and a good working knowledge of the Responsible Business agenda.  Experience of operating effectively at the very highest level in the private, public or voluntary sectors and evidence of building and using networks is key for success in this role.

Purpose

To raise the impact of Business in the Community in Wales, in accordance with overall organisational strategy, engaging the private, public and community sectors whilst ensuring a sustainable financial base for the operation.

Working with the BITC Executive Team and the Wales Advisory Board, set the strategic direction of Business in the Community Wales and develop appropriate programmes and activities to maximise Business in the Community’s impact.

Responsibilities

Membership

Grow the membership in line with the Business in the Community membership strategy and in response to the local marketplace.  Play a leading role in business development, ensuring close collaboration with the central membership team.

Work with our members to engage, support, challenge and inspire them in responsible business practice.

Utilise the support and influence of the Wales Advisory Board, and other individual business leaders, to develop an inspirational agenda, in line with overall Business in the Community strategy, that encourages greater market penetration. 

Make a difference on the most pressing Social and Environmental issues

  • Integrate BITC campaigns in Wales, delivering these campaigns locally against agreed targets.
  • In the context of Wales, respond to any specific responsible business issues unique to Wales and explore how Wales could act as an incubator for new initiatives.
  • Use the results of our work and partnerships to demonstrate the impact of mobilising business for good in Wales.

Build a sustainable operation in Wales

  • Build on our success in Wales by:
    - Delivering the strategic and operational objectives and targets in the business plan for Wales;
    - Developing new income streams from public and private sector sources, leading on significant business development activities across all potential opportunities;
    - In alignment with BITC’s financial approach, ensure that the Welsh business finances are actively and effectively managed.
  • Lead, inspire and motivate staff to achieve results, providing for the development needs of staff within the team.  Maintain a high quality motivated and successful team who are effective in a matrix management structure.  Ensure we ‘walk the talk’ within Business in the Community as set out in our Leadership Values and RB plan.
  • Contribute to the overall strategic thinking and effective management of the organisation.

Build long-term Partnerships

  • Build and sustain effective relationships at a senior level with the leading businesses in Wales.
  • Continually improve the effective relationships at a senior level with the Welsh Government, Ministers and officials and other relevant partner organisations.
  • Build effective partnerships with key public agencies in order to deliver specific Business in the Community priorities, including the CBI, Chambers of Commerce, FSB, IOD and Business networks.
  • Manage the relationship with HRH the Prince of Wales Office and the Prince of Wales cluster of charities in Wales.

Build the Market Position of Business in the Community

  • Raise the profile and awareness of Business in the Community, building further on our reputation as the voice of responsible business practice in Wales.
  • Act as Business in the Community’s senior representative, ambassador and media spokesperson in Wales.  This will also involve fronting appropriate events and activities to maintain the brand awareness.

Responsibility of all roles

  • Ensure that health and safety and safeguarding requirements are met in the areas for which the jobholder is responsible

People Managers’ Accountabilities

  • Responsibility for ensuring a safe environment, in line with the responsibilities outlined in BITC’s Safeguarding Policy and Framework, ensuring that risks are identified, communicated and managed in line with BITC’s process, and concerns raised are responded to within 24 hours and reported appropriately.

Special conditions

Ability to travel within Wales as required, and to London potentially at least once a month.

Knowledge

  • Ideally educated to degree level with evidence of continuous personal development
