The Network Engineer is passionate about technology with a focus on the communications infrastructure that lets us deliver on our mission of bringing people, businesses and technology together.

The Network Engineer is a technical, customer facing role, working closely with Service Desk, and Project Management teams to deploy, maintain and improve solutions delivered to customers as well as maintaining and developing our own extensive Network Infrastructure. Reporting to the Service Desk Manager, this is a key role in the smooth running of our Managed Services operation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To provide technical escalation point for Service Desk personnel relating to our customers and our own infrastructure, including taking ownership of issues where appropriate.
  • To triage and escalate issues to Senior Network Engineers in accordance with SLAs and internal operating procedures.
  • To liaise with and escalate to third parties, including manufacturers and service suppliers.
  • Carry out Project related activity in accordance with defined Work Packages.
  • Carry out Change management activity on our Managed Services and Internal Infrastructure, including creation, peer review and execution of Changes in accordance with our Change Management Processes.
  • Carry out on-site installations and maintenance where appropriate.
  • Evaluate and report on new technologies and services as directed.
  • Provide training to peers and the wider business, including creation and delivery of training material and knowledge base articles.
  • Act as point of escalation for on-call engineer.
  • Working flexibly as part of a team, the role may require working at multiple locations and across defined shifts covering our core business hours.

While carrying out these duties all staff are expected to be aware of, and take into consideration the customer’s needs, and in particular the security of customers systems and data. A thorough understanding of our policies and practices in this area is crucial.

Network Engineers are expected and encouraged to maintain and develop technical, operational and commercial skills through mechanisms such as:

  • Structured CPD, including professional / technical accreditations.
  • Engagement with key technology partners.
  • Engagement with industry and trade bodies such as UKNOF and LINX.

Key Competencies:

Network Engineers will have a good background understanding of IT systems in a commercial environment as well as more detailed knowledge and experience of specific network infrastructure technologies. They are also expected to work and communicate effectively with customers, suppliers and colleagues in line with our core values.

Technical Competencies

  • Understanding of key networking concepts such as:
    - IPv4 / IPv6 addressing and routing
    - OSPF
    - VLANs
    - VPN Tunnels
    - Networking Security (ACLs, management access, firewall policies)
  • Familiarity with configuring and maintaining common network devices such as managed switches, firewalls/ security appliances, routers and wireless access points.
  • Familiarity with a range of network technologies including Fibre, Ethernet and xDSL.
  • Good background understanding of general IT and business systems and the role which a well-designed and maintained network infrastructure plays in their successful operation.
  • Good diagnostic and troubleshooting skills as applied to network related issues including use of commonly used communications protocols such as:
    - HTTP/S
    - SMTP
    - SIP
    - RTP
  • A good understanding of commonly used monitoring, analysis and orchestration protocols and tools such as:
    - SNMP
    - PRTG
    - Solar Winds/F5
    - Wireshark / PCAP tools
  • Good understanding of the structures underpinning the Internet, including IP Addressing, ASNs, Regional Internet Registries and the Domain Name System.

Network Engineers should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of new and emerging technologies, particularly as these apply to our core services and key technology partners. We expect Network Engineers to be continually improving and working toward obtaining additional recognised certifications within a structured learning path.

Commercial Awareness and Other

  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of how excellence in network design, implementation and operation, impacts on customer success.
  • Good understanding of the Managed Services business model and how effective service delivery in an ITIL framework drives efficiency and productivity.
  • Ability to develop positive and professional relationships with customers and to be able to communicate technical matters to a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to produce written reports, including diagnostic reports and incident reports.
  • Demonstrable ability to deliver against deadlines and to manage conflicting priorities.
  • Ability to build relationships with colleagues, suppliers and partners.
  • Prepared to provide results of a Basic Disclosure check of Criminal Records.
  • Full UK drivers licence.

Certification and Requirements

  • Current CCNA or other equivalent required.
  • 2+ Years’ experience in a technical IT / Telecoms role.

Person Specification:

The Network Engineers will typically have a background in the deployment and support of IT Business Systems. As well appropriate technical credentials they will also have a track record of successful customer engagement and will have been working in a related role for a minimum of 2 years.

Working in close collaboration with the broader team, this role requires people with personal drive and ambition, who also value the level of trust and teamwork required for successful service delivery and long-term customer-relationship building.

Full UK Driving licence required

Working Hours

  • The job is based on a 37.5 hour per week.
  • 34 Days Holiday including Bank Holidays.
