Senior Support Worker - Wrexham Rough Sleeper Intervention Team

Reports To: Project Manager

Term: Fixed Term (18 months)

Based At: Wrexham

Salary: £19, 372 per annum pro rata

Hours of work: Monday to Friday 6:30am - 10:30am (20 hours per week) with some flexibility required.

Introduction

The Wallich is a homelessness charity which provides support services to homeless and vulnerably-housed people. The organisation formed in 1978 in Cardiff, and now supports around 4000 people a year across the majority of Local Authorities in Wales. The Wallich's values are of empowerment and treating people with dignity, respect and an unconditional positive regard. The principles of our work are based around solution focused working, harm reduction, and the creation of an environment where the people we support are actively and meaningfully encouraged to be involved in their support, and the development and delivery of services.

Project Description

The project operates across Wrexham working with rough sleepers providing basic humanitarian aid in the community, with the aim of engaging vulnerable individuals in support services and signposting to relevant support. This project is funded through a charitable foundation.

Purpose of Role

To coordinate and provide support that enables and empowers Service Users to address housing and/or personal difficulties, build their skills and confidence, and ultimately improve their ability to access and maintain accommodation. The support will not create or increase dependence. It will ‘do with’ rather than ‘do for’. Support will help people improve their control, understanding and involvement in dealing with the issues that affect them, and assist Service Users to achieve their preferred outcomes.

Person Profile

Knowledge

  • Knowledge and understanding of current Homelessness Law, the Criminal Justice System, DWP Benefits, and the current legal framework within which you are expected to work.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how complex needs, such as substance misuse or mental health, can affect individuals and their vulnerability.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the housing management functions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how your personal life can have positive and negative impacts on your own performance and attendance.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the need for professional boundaries.

Experience

  • Experience of working with individuals with complex needs.
  • Experience of housing related support or homelessness (this can be from a personal perspective).
  • Experience of completing needs and risks assessments.
  • Experience of planning and delivering support.
  • Experience of monitoring and recording systems.
  • Experience of working with diverse people in a non-judgemental way.
  • Experience of effectively dealing with challenging situations whilst maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Experience of professionally and effectively representing the wishes and best interests of Service Users and the organisation whilst building beneficial relationships with a range of agencies.
  • Experience of lone working on own initiative and without close supervision.
  • Experience of organising resources and prioritising workloads to meet deadlines.

Other

  • Driving licence and willingness to drive The Wallich Outreach Vehicle (Street Fleet) is essential.
  • Ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable but not essential.
  • To complete a food hygiene course if a certificate is not currently held.

All Wallich staff are required to attend a 5 day induction at the commencement of their employment in Cardiff.
