Senior Support Worker - Cardiff Shoreline

Reports To: Assistant Manager & Project Manager

Based At: Cardiff

Salary: £19, 566 per annum

Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week - Predominantly 8am-4pm with one week of 12:30pm-8.30pm afternoo shifts over 7 week rolling rota

Introduction

The Wallich is a homelessness charity which provides support services to homeless and vulnerably-housed people. The organisation formed in 1978 in Cardiff, and now supports around 4000 people a year across the majority of Local Authorities in Wales. The Wallich's values are of empowerment and treating people with dignity, respect and an unconditional positive regard. The principles of our work are based around solution focused working, harm reduction, and the creation of an environment where the people we support are actively and meaningfully encouraged to be involved in their support, and the development and delivery of services.

Project Description

The project operates across Cardiff West working with service Users who have a history of long-term alcohol misuse.  The service provides residential support with the aim of meeting individuals’ needs, which promote independence and lead to a sustainable move-on.  The project is funded through the Supporting People Programme Grant and is required to meet the Welsh Government’s National Outcomes Framework. The Framework’s four main aims are:

• Promoting Personal and Community Safety

• Promoting Independence and Control

• Promoting Economic Progress and Financial Control

• Promoting Health and Wellbeing

This post is subject to an enhanced DBS Disclosure.

Purpose of Role

To coordinate and provide residential support that enables and empowers Service Users to address housing and/or personal difficulties, build their skills and confidence, and ultimately improve their ability to maintain their future accommodation. The support will not create or increase dependence. It will ‘do with’ rather than ‘do for’, so it’s likely that support will involve accompanying Service Users initially, in order to familiarise them with an activity or appointment. Support will help people improve their control, understanding and involvement in dealing with the issues that affect them, and assist Service Users to achieve their preferred outcomes. In addition, to meet the housing management needs of the project ensuring the delivery of a safe, secure and effective service.

Personal Profile

Knowledge

  • Knowledge and understanding of current Homelessness Law, the Criminal Justice System, DWP Benefits, and the current legal framework within which you are expected to work.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how complex needs, such as substance misuse or mental health, can affect individuals and their vulnerability.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the housing management functions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how your personal life can have positive and negative impacts on your own performance and attendance.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the need for professional boundaries.

Experience

  • Experience of working with individuals with complex needs.
  • Experience of housing related support or homelessness (this can be from a personal perspective).
  • Experience of completing needs and risks assessments.
  • Experience of planning and delivering support.
  • Experience of monitoring and recording systems.
  • Experience of working with diverse people in a non-judgemental way.
  • Experience of effectively dealing with challenging situations whilst maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Experience of professionally and effectively representing the wishes and best interests of Service Users and the organisation whilst building beneficial relationships with a range of agencies.
  • Experience of lone working on own initiative and without close supervision.
  • Experience of organising resources and prioritising workloads to meet deadlines.

Other

  • Driving licence and own vehicle is desirable but not essential.
  • Ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable but not essential.

Induction details: New starters at The Wallich will be required to complete a 5 day Induction in Cardiff at the commencement of their employment.
