The Organisation

Wales & West Housing is one of the leading housing providers in Wales. We operate across 15 local authority areas, providing quality affordable homes and services to more than 19,000 residents. We are a major Welsh employer, with over 400 staff at WWH and 230 staff in our two subsidiary companies - figures that are growing year on year. We have been established since 1965, and we have grown from our first scheme of 49 flats in Cardiff, to over 12,000 properties across Wales. We have three main offices situated in north Wales, west Wales and our headquarters in Cardiff.

This has been a big year for us at WWH, not least because we were ranked as the top Welsh not-for-profit organisation in the 2018 Sunday Times Best Companies list and fourth in the UK overall, we have been in the Top Ten for the last seven consecutive years. We are really proud of the fact that our staff love working for us; much of this is because of the unique culture we have here at WWH. Our aim is to create a place that everyone wants to work in and environment where every staff member feels supported and valued. Our values are really important to us at WWH and you will hear us talk a lot about being a values led organisation - our values drive the way we behave.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced financial accountant or financial controller to oversee our Rents & Billings team. This is an exciting role with significant latitude for the right person to make it their own, taking a key controllership role across critical balance sheet accounts, redesigning processes and reconciliations to improve both accuracy and efficiency, and leading an experienced team in the underlying accounting entries.

Charging the correct rents and charges to our residents, customers and corporate partners is critical to our credibility. Financial control over the aggregation and reconciliation of these charges and the associated remittances across almost 12,000 properties is imperative to ensure the reliability of our financial reporting.

The ideal candidate will be independent, self-motivated and possess a strong sense of ownership of their role and all that it encompasses. They will have significant experience of account reconciliations and be able to identify key control accounts and ensure their accuracy at all times. Possessing a fastidious attention to detail, they will take overarching responsibility for a range of the group balance sheet and use their experience and insight to guide the team in their accounting entries as part of their daily routines. They will be responsible for ensuring that financial data interfacing from the rent ledger to the nominal ledger is correct and any anomalies addressed.

They will have significant experience of financial reporting with a sound knowledge of Excel and the ability to summarise large volumes of data. They will have an important role inputting into the group rolling forecast and calculation of bad debt provisions. They will also take ownership of the group’s property stock records, liaising with colleagues in our Development and Legal departments in respect of newly built properties, purchases and disposals to ensure that key records are accurately updated and reflect the correct rents and charges.

They will lead the annual rent increase process including the application of new rents and charges to all properties, together with the co-ordination and control of all letters, direct debit increases and communication with all relevant external organisations.
