Job Purpose

The role is to join the Finsbury food Group, but in a new business that is being set up at the Cardiff site. The role will entail putting in place the right systems and processes aligned to the new business and support its growth. To manage customer and visitors from outside audit bodies including EHO, TSO and to liaise with the Technical and Operational teams to comply and implement Technical Site Standards throughout the site, and to head up the Technical team in the absence of the Head of Technical. 

Role Key Accountabilities

  • Part of the team to manage customer and third party audits to achieve and maintain accreditation standards, BRC A grade, TMFS Green or higher, and other customer audit standards
  • Ensure all Technical manufacturing processes comply with relevant internal standards and those set by regulatory authorities.
  • Establish and maintain procedures for reporting, investigating, recording and analysing non-conformances and complaints.
  • Act as key contact with customers and potential customers in all technical issues including responses to complaints and delivering a reduction plan to resolve and respond to customer issues and inquiries.
  • Act as a catalyst for change and improvement in performance and quality throughout the business, identifying improvements and solving technical or processing problems as they arise.
  • Provide technical knowledge and support to the introduction of new products, processing methods and manufacturing equipment.
  • Work with operations teams to establish and improve procedures, standards and systems
  • Interact with the technical teams, providing mentoring or coaching as required.
  • To contribute too and be a major part of the HACCP team on site, Maintain up to date HACCP and chair HACCP Food Safety Team.
  • To actively improve Technical KPI’s through the implementation of robust action plans which deliver results.
  • To keep within the Technical budget and look for ways of reducing cost without compromising Technical standards.
  • To lead by example in encouraging appropriate behavioural standards in support of the company’s values and culture, coaching employees in the implementation and training of technical standards, systems and procedures.
  • Completing and setting up the monitoring of site individual KPI’s within the technical department
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with Food Safety, Legality and Quality Systems
  • To work with and assist the other technical functions in achieving set KPIs
  • Take best practise from around the business and outside bodies to influence best practise within the Cardiff site

    Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Technical Management experience gained from the food industry role involving customer contact and team management and supervision across a range of people practices
  • Knowledgeable in regulatory affairs, current legislation, quality systems and retailer standards, compliance and Quality Assurance.
  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Food Science, Microbiology or a related discipline is desirable
  • Competent in general management of teams and customers
  • Able to lead behavioural and cultural change
  • Educated to Degree or other suitable food science disciplines is desirable
  • Previous experience of the bakery or confectionary process/manufacturing preferred.
  • Experience of introducing change/improvements that have led to increased performance and efficiency
  • Computer literate, with good use of Excel and spreadsheets
  • Desirable to have “free from” experience

 Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s)

  • Reduction of complaints year on year
  • Help maintain green standard audits and work toward blue
  • Maintain BRC A Grade and work towards AA Grade
  • Reduce number of non-conformances (GMP) year on year on Technical Score card

 Decision Making

  • Ability to assimilate information rapidly and take decisions relating to food safety, legality and quality.
  • To be commercially aware of consequences of decisions and to be confident in making decisions
  • Understand the factory capabilities, when making customer based decisions to resolve customer related problems.

 Dimensions of role

  • The role reports directly into the Head of Technical
  • The role will have Quality Assurance and Technologist reports in the absence of the Quality Assurance Manager
  • The role will be influencing and working alongside the QA Manager and their team
  • Liaise with the QA Manager and heading up the department in the absence of the Head of Technical
  • To work alongside the Process Manager when dealing with Customer related correspondence on trials and visits.
  • Work with the Hygiene Manager on cleaning and Microbiological issues

    Other Role Information
  • The role is based at the Cardiff facility, but will be required to travel to and carry out duties at other facilities within the group and customer base.
  • The job holder will be required to work those hours necessary to fulfil the duties and responsibilities. This is typically a 37.5 hour week, however, you will be required to undertake additional hours when required.
  • You will have complete freedom of access to all areas of the site including production areas.
  • Show awareness of other roles and responsibilities and requirements when carrying out your duties
