The Organisation

Wales & West Housing are one of the leading housing providers in Wales. We operate across 15 local authority areas, providing quality, affordable homes and services to more than 19,000 residents. The Opportunity

The role of PR & Marketing Officer is to support the strategic approach to presenting strong positive and consistent messages for the Wales and West Group and its brands. You will be the fifth member of the busy PR & Communications Team.

The work of the team is varied, fast moving, exciting and challenging and covers public relations activities, all internal and external communications, some events management as well as helping to market a growing number of products and services, using a wide range of channels and mediums.

Often our busy operational staff don’t recognise that their work is newsworthy so your primary role will be to liaise with staff organisation-wide, to identify these stories. Your role will include researching stories, writing, editing, taking / commissioning good quality photos, shooting / commissioning digital video footage and uploading and issuing the resulting material to all appropriate platforms and outlets.

Our own platforms and mediums include: our quarterly residents magazine in Touch, our Business Plan, plus a range of digital platforms which currently include our website, our new intranet, Twitter, LinkedIn and blogs and two Facebook pilots.

You will also be required to promote, and protect, the reputation of the Group by reacting appropriately to frequent media and stakeholder enquiries. You will also be expected to maintain and further develop our existing contacts with the media across Wales and UK-wide, as well as develop productive new ones with a range of external organisations.

You will help the PR & Communications team, and the wider organisation, to continually develop our website, and our intranet, to their fullest potential in order to communicate with a wide variety of audiences, both externally and internally.

You will also work closely with the PR & Marketing Officer, who is part of the team, based in our South Wales office and help cover for each other.

The Candidate

We are looking for someone who is a confident self-starter, with a can-do attitude and who is always happy to get stuck in. Substantial experience of a busy newsroom, or similar in a PR / media environment is essential. Some experience of marketing would be beneficial, or, a willingness to learn.

We are looking for someone who is hardworking and flexible who can not only sniff out a good PR or marketing opportunity from a mile away, but who has the experience, skills and tenacity to make the best use of it.

Our residents and staff are based throughout Wales, so a willingness to travel is essential, as is the ability to maintain close and productive working relationships despite geographical distance.

You must be as good in a team as you are out on your own and a great sense of humour is vital as is the willingness and ability to ‘juggle’ often competing demands. It goes without saying that you must also be an excellent all round communicator and able to write in an engaging and accessible way to a wide variety of people and organisations.

You must have a genuine understanding of, and solid commitment to, the values and principles that underpin our work as we value creativity and welcome those who explore new ways of doing things.
