GeoMôn is one of only 229 UNESCO Global Geoparks in the world. Each geopark is a region of outstanding international geological significance. The Isle of Anglesey meets this requirement because of its exceptional geodiversity and its unique geological history. It is recognised for its outstanding landscapes and rich environmental heritage.
UNESCO geoparks also incorporate aspects of cultural heritage, socio-economics, tourism, industry, food, leisure, health and wellbeing that are linked to geodiversity. Geoparks engage in activities that demonstrate how the geopark is a living, working landscape where science and local communities engage in a mutually beneficial way. UNESCO geoparks operate within the framework of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDFs) and work to achieve these goals through partnerships with other stakeholders in their regions: local government, businesses, agencies, community groups, etc.
GeoMôn is a registered charity with a Board of Trustees that has a broad range of scientific and business expertise. GeoMôn is unusual in the UNESCO network in being staffed by volunteers. These include the Trustees and a team of local people who operate our Visitor Centre at Amlwch Port on the north coast. The Visitor Centre has exhibitions demonstrating the geodiversity of the island with a focus on climate change and environmental sustainability. GeoMôn runs monthly field excursions for members and non-members. It provides educational packages for schools and in-person courses for people with special needs. It provides expert services to stakeholders on issues relating to the geodiversity of the island.
